In the classic personal development book Think and Grow Rich,Napoleon Hill says "Sex desire is the most powerful of human desires. When driven by this desire, men develop keenness of imagination, courage, will-power, persistence, and creative ability unknown to them at other times."

Sex is associated with achievement, and it's an amazing realization. But how did we get to a point where this seems almost controversial to talk or write about?

I believe our lack of discussion about sex is directly correlated to our socialization and, for women, gender. It all goes back to our puritanical American roots. Our culture downplays the importance of sex and has made sex something that is not discussed or viewed as a critical aspect of life. In particular, women tend to be more wary of societal reproach, and so they channel their sexual energy less often then men. Women might be holding back even more during times when they see another's sexual energy used in a professionally detrimental way--think about all the political figure that have gone up in flames because of their deviant sexual behavior.

This lack of discussion creates a gap in understanding and prevents most of us from knowing the benefits of having a healthy sex life or its potential impact on our success.

It's time we stop hiding and start talking.

1. Sexual energy is transmutable.

Hill says that people of great achievement have "learned the art of sex transmutation"--they can transfer their sexual energy to other pursuits, like their professions.

Sex drive is one of the most potent forces that we as humans have access to. Imagine the possibilities if you used that energy to lead your career ambition. If you can channel that force positively, you will go to great heights in terms of thought and success.

2. Sex and love foster true engagement in your work.

Napoleon Hill noted that "the men who have achieved great fortunes and achieved outstanding recognition in literature, art, industry, architecture, and the other professions, were motivated by the influence of a woman."

He says that "Love is the emotion, which serves as a safety valve, and insures balance, poise and constructive effort. Love, romance and sex may lift one to an altitude of a genius."

Sex and love combined is the secret sauce. Like any pleasurable activity, if you are not in love with yourself and fully engaged with it, you will not see as much benefit. It's just like doing a workout but beating yourself up mentally while doing it: the benefits of the workout will be negated by your negative mental chatter. The same goes with sex. Great, connected, loving sex can be the fuel you are looking for that next big idea or inspiration you need to go the next level in your career.

3. Sex puts you in a peak state for creativity.

The energy, aliveness and desire you gain from sex can fuel your creativity and innovative thinking. There's a physiological effect, too--the chemicals that are released during orgasm are healthy for you. Oxytocin is released throughout the body, and it relaxes you and makes you feel closer to your partner. It's also been recently found that this hormone enables cognitive flexibility pathways, fostering creative thinking and problem solving.

I challenge you to think about this and remember that sexual desire is one of life's most powerful--and natural--forces. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how a lackluster relationship or sex life deflates someone. In contrast, someone who is alive, full of desire and energized by his or her relationship and sex, glows. They radiate and are using that energy to fuel all aspects of their life.

So go ahead, cultivate your sexual energy. I am willing to bet you will have fun, please your partner and see your career prosper. How can it get better than that?
